How to Ace the PTE Academic 2025 After the Latest August Update

If you are preparing for the PTE Academic exam after August 7, 2025, you’ll need to be aware of the important updates Pearson has introduced. These changes are meant to make the test more practical and reflective of real-life situations. Instead of focusing solely on academic language, the updated test will now assess how well you communicate in everyday English. Let’s dive into the new changes and explore the best ways to prepare for the updated format.

What’s New in the PTE 2025 Update?

New Speaking Tasks

Pearson has added two new speaking tasks to better assess your ability to use English in natural, real-world situations:

Respond to a Situation: In this task, you’ll hear or read a brief scenario and need to respond appropriately. For instance, you might be asked how to politely decline an invitation or give useful advice. This task evaluates your ability to respond to common situations in a practical way.

Summarize a Group Discussion: You’ll listen to a short group conversation and then provide a summary of the main points in 20–30 seconds. This task tests your ability to listen carefully, absorb information, and clearly communicate the most important details.

Both tasks focus on communication in everyday contexts, emphasizing your ability to speak and listen naturally in real-life situations.

Beep Sound in “Repeat Sentence”

A simple but helpful change in the “Repeat Sentence” task is the addition of a beep sound. This beep tells you when it’s your turn to speak, helping you stay on track and avoid distractions during the task.

Updated Test Interface

The test interface has been redesigned for a more user-friendly experience. Key updates include:

A circular progress bar to show how far you’ve come in the test.

Adjustable font sizes to make reading easier for everyone.

An audio waveform so you can see if your voice is being picked up clearly.

A double mic check to ensure better sound quality during your speaking responses.

The removal of the keyboard check, making the process smoother.

Slightly Longer Exam Time

The exam now lasts about 2 hours and 15 minutes, which is 15 minutes longer than the previous version. This additional time is due to the new speaking tasks, so make sure to pace yourself accordingly.

Human Scoring for 7 Tasks

In another major change, seven tasks will now be scored by real people instead of relying solely on AI. These tasks include:

Describe Image

Retell Lecture

Respond to a Situation

Summarize Group Discussion

Summarize Written Text

Write Essay

Summarize Spoken Text

With human scoring, the focus is now on how clearly and naturally you communicate. Avoid memorizing answers, and focus on speaking in a natural and authentic way.

How to Prepare for the New PTE Format

Practice Speaking Naturally: With the new format, it’s essential to speak naturally rather than memorizing responses. The tasks are designed to test your real-life communication skills, so try practicing in casual conversations or role-playing different scenarios.

Practice Summarizing: Work on summarizing discussions, podcasts, or videos you hear in your own words. This will help you excel in the “Summarize Group Discussion” task and strengthen both your listening and speaking abilities.

Focus on Fluency and Tone: It’s not just about what you say, but also how you say it. Make sure to speak clearly and maintain a steady pace. Avoid speaking too fast or too slow, and keep a calm, confident tone.

Stay Calm and Confident: The updated test is all about showing how well you can use English in real situations. Focus on clear communication, and don’t worry about being perfect. Stay confident and trust yourself.

Final Thoughts

The PTE Academic 2025 update is designed to reflect real-world English usage. With a greater emphasis on communication skills rather than memorized answers, the new format offers a fairer and more accurate way to measure your English ability. If you practice speaking naturally, stay calm, and focus on clear, authentic responses, you’ll be well-prepared for the test. Good luck!
